Interactive comment on “Modelling the climatic drivers determining photosynthesis and carbon allocation in evergreen Mediterranean forests

چکیده

Gea-Izquierdo et al. present a landscape-scale biogeochemical model for the exchange of carbon over forest ecosystems. They describe adaptations to the basic model formulation to try and better represent the assimilation of carbon and its allocation within the tree. Key aspects of their formulation are the incorporation of nonstructural carbohydrate storage and the medium-term acclimation of photosynthesis and growth rates to temperature and water availability. They calibrate the model against observations from two forest sites, and use it to demonstrate that the processes of growth and photosynthesis are decoupled at these sites, in accordance with ecophys-

Interactive comment on “Modelling the climatic drivers determining photosynthesis and carbon allocation in evergreen Mediterranean forests

General comment The paper of Gea-Izquierdo et al. is an interesting exercise of calibrating a process-based model to forecast uptake and allocation of carbon by using a combination of eddy covariance CO2 flux data, dendrochronological time series of secondary growth and forest inventory data as raw data. I recognize process-based models are very complex, and of difficult implementation because ...

Interactive comment on “Modelling above-ground carbon dynamics using multi-temporal airborne lidar: insights from a Mediterranean woodland” by W. Simonson et al

Referee 1 The paper is clear, scientifically sound, and well written. It represents an important study in the field of biomass and carbon forest monitoring, as few multitemporal lidar studies are available and none in the Mediterranean ecosystem under analysis. The methods are sound and the discussion is interesting. Minor scientific questions are posed below. Response: We are grateful for this...

Nutrient availability as the key regulator of global forest carbon balance

Forests strongly a ect climate through the exchange of large amounts of atmospheric CO2 (ref. 1). The main drivers of spatial variability in net ecosystem production (NEP) on a global scale are, however, poorly known. As increasing nutrient availability increases the production of biomass per unit of photosynthesis2 and reduces heterotrophic3 respiration in forests, we expected nutrients to det...

Adaptive Signifi cance of Evergreen vs. Deciduous Leaves: Solving the Triple Paradox

Patterns in the dominance of evergreen vs. deciduous plants have long interested ecologists, biogeographers, and global modellers. But previous models to account for these patterns have signifi cant weaknesses. Bottom-up, mechanistic models – based on physiology, competition, and natural selection – have often been non-quantitative or restricted to a small range of habitats, and almost all have...
